Laundry detergents and other household chemical liquids are commonly packed in large plastic pails for wholesale, industrial and commercial applications. During filling, warehousing and transportation, changes in temperature, formulation activity and continuous vibration may cause gas or pressure to accumulate inside a sealed container.
When a conventional airtight cap is used, the internal pressure cannot be released effectively. The pail may gradually swell, deform or leak around the closure. These problems can damage cartons, affect pallet stability and increase the risk of customer complaints.
A household chemical manufacturer contacted Kunshan Xinxia Plastic Packaging Co., Ltd. to develop a packaging closure that could provide sealing, controlled pouring and pressure equalization in one integrated design.
The customer produced liquid laundry detergent in large plastic pails with a 57 mm opening. The products needed to remain in storage before being transported over long distances to distributors.
The original closure included a pouring spout but did not have a pressure-balancing function. After filling and sealing, some containers showed visible expansion during storage and transportation. Temperature changes inside shipping containers increased the packaging risk.
The customer required a new cap solution with the following functions:
The detergent formulation and changes in environmental temperature caused pressure to increase inside the sealed pail. A standard non-vented closure could not provide a controlled gas-release path.
The customer could not simply add an open vent hole because detergent could leak during handling, vibration or container tilting. The venting component needed to allow gas exchange while helping prevent bulk liquid from passing through the cap.
The cap also needed to maintain the original pouring function. Commercial users had to dispense detergent cleanly without uncontrolled flow around the container opening.
Changing the pail design would have required new molds, packaging trials and production adjustments. Therefore, the preferred solution was a customized closure compatible with the existing 57 mm container neck.
Kunshan Xinxia Plastic Packaging Co., Ltd. recommended a vented laundry detergent pail cap combining a translucent outer cap, an integrated breathable membrane and a red pouring-spout component.
The breathable membrane was installed in the upper section of the cap to create a controlled gas-exchange channel. When internal pressure increased, gas could gradually pass through the microporous membrane. At the same time, the membrane helped resist liquid penetration, dust and external moisture under appropriate application conditions.
The red pouring spout was retained as an independent functional component. Its curved structure helped guide the liquid during dispensing and improved pouring control for commercial users.
The complete closure therefore provided three primary functions:
Before mass production, the customer supplied information about the container opening, filling liquid and expected transportation conditions. Kunshan Xinxia prepared prototype samples for assembly and packaging evaluation.
The evaluation focused on:
Because airflow and water-entry pressure depend on the selected membrane model, the final membrane specification was determined according to the customer’s pressure-release requirements and filled-package test results.
| Item | Project Specification |
|---|---|
| Product Name | Vented Laundry Detergent Pail Cap |
| Application | Gas-generating laundry detergent and household chemical liquids |
| Container Opening | 57 mm |
| Size Options | Custom sizes available according to drawing or sample |
| Cap Structure | Outer cap, pouring spout and breathable membrane |
| Cap Material | PP or PE, selected according to application |
| Cap Color | Translucent white outer cap with red pouring spout |
| Membrane Type | Waterproof and breathable membrane |
| Primary Functions | Sealing, pressure equalization and controlled pouring |
| Airflow | Selected according to membrane model and customer requirements |
| Water-Entry Pressure | Confirmed according to membrane model and test conditions |
| Customization | Size, color, membrane performance and packaging |
| Recommended Validation | Fit, airflow, leakage, compatibility and transportation testing |
After the initial sample evaluation, the customer confirmed that the integrated structure was more suitable for the application than the previous non-vented cap.
The breathable membrane provided a controlled route for gas release without requiring an exposed vent hole. The pouring spout remained easy to operate, and the cap could be matched with the customer’s existing pail design.
The customer also valued the ability to adjust the membrane specification. Instead of using one universal venting value, Kunshan Xinxia could recommend different membrane options according to the formulation, expected gas-generation rate and leakage-resistance requirements.
The customized closure helped the customer improve the overall reliability of its laundry detergent packaging system. The main benefits included:
This application demonstrates how a small closure modification can address a significant packaging problem. For laundry detergents and other gas-generating daily chemical products, a conventional airtight cap may not provide adequate pressure management.
The 57 mm vented laundry detergent pail cap developed by Kunshan Xinxia Plastic Packaging Co., Ltd. combines a breathable membrane, sealing structure and pouring spout in one practical solution. It helps balance internal pressure while maintaining dispensing convenience and packaging integrity.
Customers can provide their container drawing, cap sample, liquid information, target airflow, water-entry pressure requirement and annual demand. Kunshan Xinxia can then arrange membrane selection, structural evaluation and prototype samples for application testing.
Yes. It can be evaluated for fabric-care liquids, floor cleaners, bleaching products and other gas-generating household chemicals. Compatibility testing is required for each formulation.
No. The 57 mm version is used in this application case. Other sizes can be customized according to the customer’s container drawing or physical sample.
Yes. Different breathable membrane models provide different airflow and water-entry pressure levels. The appropriate model is selected according to the application requirements.
The membrane helps resist liquid penetration while allowing gas exchange. Final performance depends on the liquid, pressure, cap structure, membrane model and transportation conditions. Filled-package testing is necessary.
Customers should provide the container-neck dimensions, cap sample or drawing, filling-liquid information, required airflow, leakage-resistance requirements and expected storage and transportation conditions.
